Infuriating Google commercial imagines the founding fathers embracing AI – The Verge

Google imagines if the founding fathers used Gemini AI to write the Declaration of Independence, and it should make Americans of every political stripe furious.

“Group project, but make it 1776.” That’s how a new commercial for Google Workspace opens. And things only get cringier from there. The clip imagines what it would be like if the founding fathers turned to Google’s collaboration tools and Gemini to help them draft the Declaration of Independence.

Ben Franklin texts Thomas Jefferson to check on the status of a draft, who takes a photo and uses AI to transcribe it into a Google Doc. Franklin and Adams hop in to make edits in suggestion mode, Gemini finds them a meeting time, takes notes during a Google Meet call, and then Nano Banana whips up a seal for the United States featuring a turkey (probably the more honest choice, instead of an eagle).

The last thing before the fireworks go off, the founding fathers ask Gemini for its advice on whether to give King George III edit access to the Declaration of Independence. Which should make Americans of all political stripes want to throw their phones out a window. (I wonder what Gemini’s reaction would have been if the founding fathers had asked about women’s voting rights, slavery, or manifest destiny?)

The whole thing is ill-advised, corny, and just plain dumb. As CUNY history professor Angus Johnston said on Bluesky, “Even in a corny fantasy joke, it’s impossible to make the case that AI is a useful tool for political organizing, writing, or human collaboration.”

At least eight people, including four children, were shot late Saturday night in Brooklyn’s Coney Island, leaving one woman in critical condition.

Officers responded to reports of multiple people shot at about 10:35 p.m., New York police said in a statement. They found eight victims with gunshot wounds in the front courtyard of a residential building.

The victims — four adults and four children — were taken to nearby hospitals. The children are ages 6, 7, 12 and 14.

The preliminary investigation indicates an unknown man dressed in all black and wearing a black ski mask approached the fence line along Surf Avenue in Brooklyn and fired multiple rounds into the courtyard where a family barbecue was taking place before he ran away, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Sunday morning.

“There is no indication at this time that there was any argument or altercation at the barbecue before the shooting occurred,” Tisch said.

Police are investigating whether the shooting may be connected to a confirmed gang-related homicide on the same block last week, she said.

Archaeologists also recently uncovered human remains and a myriad of artifacts in part of a Greco-Roman cemetery that dates back more than 2,300 years. The complete skeletal remains of two wild boars, a rare find at ancient Egyptian funerary sites, were found.  At the time, boars were known as Seth (or Set), a deity associated with chaos and violence in ancient Egyptian mythology.

Along with the strategic Suez Canal, tourism is a major source of foreign currency in the cash-strapped country.

LAMPEDUSA, Italy ― Pope Leo XIV on Saturday defended the dignity of migrants during a visit to the Italian island of Lampedusa, where the Mediterranean waters beckon as a pathway of hope to a better life in Europe but also have become a graveyard for many who die trying.

Leo’s appearance commemorated a landmark visit to Lampedusa on July 8, 2013, by his predecessor, Pope Francis, who used his first pastoral trip away from Rome to signal the plight of migrants as an increasingly prominent issue for the global Catholic Church.

For Leo, the first U.S.-born pontiff, there was added symbolism in making his own statement about migrants on July Fourth — what Vatican officials described as a “counterpoint” to the migrant crackdown in the United States, which Leo has called “inhuman.”

Leo laid a bouquet of white and yellow flowers at the simply marked graves of migrants drowned at sea, and held an outdoor Mass, where he invoked the parable of the Good Samaritan and sought to inspire a nation, a continent and a world increasingly weary of mass migration.

“The Gospel resounds where peoples meet, people welcome one another, their lives intertwine and different cultures engage in dialogue,” Leo said. “It falls silent, however, when each person makes him or herself an island.”

A representative for Swift confirmed in a statement provided to CBS News that the two were married in a ceremony officiated by comedian Adam Sandler. He was described by the representative as a “friend” of the couple. 

The couple had no bridesmaids or groomsmen. Swift’s brother, Austin Swift, served as her “Man of Honor,” the representative said, while Kelce’s brother, retired NFL offensive lineman Jason Kelce, served as Kelce’s best man. 

According to Swift’s representative, her wedding dress was created by Christian Dior Haute Couture.   

A jumbotron outside Madison Square Garden lit up with the words, “JUST&T MARRIED!” following the news. The Empire State Building also announced on social media that it had lit up in “something blue” in celebration of the wedding.

Hernán Alberto Gil Flores emerged to safety covered in dust atop a stretcher surrounded by helmet-clad rescue workers after being trapped since June 24 under rubble in the basement of the Galerías Playa Grande shopping center in the coastal town in La Guaira.

Rescuers, who initially made contact with Gil Flores over the weekend, worked more than 100 hours to free him — navigating a highly unstable structure, torrential rain and persistent aftershocks to tunnel down to the survivor.

Teams carrying flags from around the world cheered as rescuers carried Gil Flores, wearing an oxygen mask and covered in an orange tarp, through throngs of people to an ambulance where they methodically checked his vital signs.
