PlayStation dropped news that will sting anyone who still likes holding — and owning — a video game in their hands. New PlayStation games will no longer be sold on discs starting January 2028, including Sony and third-party titles.
Sony is framing it as simply following where consumer habits are, since digital sales have outpaced physical discs for years, and recent figures back that up. Still, this is a massive step toward the dissolution of physical media in games, since PlayStation holds the biggest share of the console market. “Grand Theft Auto VI,” a game expected to be the biggest media launch in history, recently announced it is forgoing disc distribution altogether.
