LONDON — Nigel Farage gambled on overcoming a financial scandal by resigning as a member of the British parliament Tuesday — but all the main rival parties are refusing to play along with the local by-election that will now follow.

Amid intense scrutiny of Farage’s financial arrangements, the leader of Britain’s populist-right Reform UK party announced he is quitting as the MP for the seaside constituency of Clacton – with a catch.

He will now stand as a candidate in the Clacton by-election he has triggered, in a move that aims to brush off mounting attacks on him over his finances and bolster his personal mandate.
